Powder Coating in the EV Industry: Growth and Outlook

Summary: As the global EV industry grows rapidly, powder coating is gaining significant share in EV component coating with its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and high-performance advantages.

Powder Coating in the EV Industry: Growth and Outlook

In H1 2024, global electric vehicle (EV) production and sales grew 32% and 34% YoY respectively. EV market penetration has crossed 18% globally, with leading markets reaching 35%+. The rapid EV growth is creating new opportunities and challenges for the automotive parts coating industry.

In EV battery pack housing coating, batteries place special demands on coating insulation, heat resistance, and corrosion protection. Epoxy powder coating provides excellent electrical insulation (≥1,000 MΩ), 180 °C+ heat tolerance, and 2,000+ hour salt spray performance — making it the preferred coating for battery pack housings.

In automotive wheel coating, traditional solvent-based liquid coating is being replaced by powder coating due to VOCs and cost concerns. Polyester powder coatings rival liquid paint in gloss while delivering superior mechanical properties and 25%-40% lower per-unit coating cost.

In automotive chassis components, suspension systems, and body-in-white, powder coating is also expanding rapidly. Hybrid powders (epoxy + polyester) deliver mechanical performance plus appearance and outdoor weather resistance approaching automotive body coating standards.

Anticipating EV industry growth, MUSI Technology developed a dedicated powder coating solution for EV components. Three key features: robotic automatic spray ensures consistency in high-volume production; MES system integration provides full process parameter traceability; specialized battery pack coating processes ensure insulation and heat resistance.

MUSI's EV coating solution has now been deployed at multiple Tier-1 suppliers serving major EV brands — 15 lines delivered to date with high stability and customer satisfaction. As the EV supply chain expands globally, powder coating will play an even larger role.
