Coating Energy-Storage Enclosures for Coastal and Offshore Sites: Designing for ISO 12944 C5 and CX

Quick answer: Battery storage at ports, islands and offshore wind hubs sits in ISO 12944-2 corrosivity category C5 (very high) or CX (extreme). A box built for those sites needs thorough abrasive blasting, a zinc-rich or epoxy primer, a high-build intermediate coat and a UV-stable topcoat — and a line that can apply that system consistently at production speed.

Why coastal boxes fail

Salt deposits attract moisture and keep steel wet long after rain has stopped. Corrosion starts where the film is thinnest: sheared edges, weld seams, bolt holes and the underside of the base frame. A paint system that looks fine inland can blister within a few years on the coast if these areas are under-built.

Surface preparationautomatic blasting to a clean, profiled surface, followed by blow-off, so the primer bonds to bare steel.
Coating systemthree coats rather than one, with stripe coats on edges and welds.
Durability targetISO 12944-1 defines durability ranges from low (up to 7 years) to very high (more than 25 years); the paint system and film build should be chosen for the target range.

What the line needs

Consistent film build is the whole game. Automatic reciprocators on both sides, top and bottom apply the flat faces evenly; robots or skilled operators handle interior cavities and complex frames. A rain test at the end of the line checks seals and door gaskets before the box leaves the plant.

Reference line configuration

For reference, a current 20-ft energy-storage box line design handles boxes of 6,058 × 2,438 × 2,591 mm up to 2,500 kg on a box-pulling chain, with automatic blasting, primer, intermediate and topcoat booths of 10 × 6.6 × 5.2 m, paint drying at 80–120 °C, powder curing at 200–220 °C, a rain test chamber and 160,000 m³/h of VOC treatment. The full table is on our container line case; MUSI’s fastest energy-storage box lines release one finished box per minute.

FAQ

Can powder coating reach C5? Dual-coat powder systems over blasted and pretreated steel are used for high-corrosivity sites, but the specification should come from the coating supplier for the exact category and durability.

Galvanised steel or blasted steel? Both are used. Galvanised boxes need a pretreatment suited to zinc; blasted boxes need a primer applied quickly before flash rust forms.
