Coating Energy-Storage Cabinets for Cold Climates: Nordic, Canadian and Central Asian Plants
Quick answer: In cold regions the challenge is inside the plant as much as outside: steel arriving from an unheated store is colder than the booth air, paint needs a minimum application temperature, and heating large volumes of make-up air is expensive. A cold-climate cabinet line needs heated and recirculated booth air, part preheating, insulated ovens and heat recovery.
Temperature control
- Bring steel to booth temperature before painting, so it stays above the dew point and the paint flows correctly.
- Heat booth make-up air and recover heat from exhaust where the process allows.
- Use insulated booth panels, ovens and high-speed doors to limit heat loss.

The finished cabinet
Cabinets in cold climates face freeze–thaw cycles and road salt near highways. Well-cured coatings with good edge coverage and sealed seams, checked in a rain test, protect the steel and keep water out of the battery compartment.
Reference line configuration
For reference, a current 20-ft energy-storage box line design handles boxes of 6,058 × 2,438 × 2,591 mm up to 2,500 kg on a box-pulling chain, with automatic blasting, primer, intermediate and topcoat booths of 10 × 6.6 × 5.2 m, paint drying at 80–120 °C, powder curing at 200–220 °C, a rain test chamber and 160,000 m³/h of VOC treatment. The full table is on our container line case; MUSI’s fastest energy-storage box lines release one finished box per minute.
FAQ
Does powder coating work in cold plants? Yes. Powder is not affected by solvent flash-off, and the curing oven provides the heat; the key is keeping parts dry and at room temperature before the booth.
